I’m admittedly a fan of vegan fast food every now and then, so I wanted to share my thoughts on some of the new vegan options I’ve tried recently.

People often demonstrate an understanding that eating animals is unethical and unsustainable, but choose to do so, giving various reasons to rationalize this decision. This is an example of cognitive dissonance, the mental discomfort that results from holding two conflicting beliefs. In many cases of those who eat meat, the conflicting beliefs are “I love and care for animals” and “I eat meat”. This version of cognitive dissonance is often referred to as the “meat paradox” – in short, I don’t want to harm animals, but I eat animals.
In the early days, Farm Sanctuary was a shoestring operation. Gene and Lorri funded it by selling tofu hot dogs at Grateful Dead concerts. Over the years, it has grown tremendously.
In his new book, Bill Gates outlines a plan for the world to get to net zero greenhouse gas emissions. While emphasizing meat and dairy as the main culprits for emissions in the agricultural sector, he gives short shrift to veganism as part of the solution, instead claiming it is unrealistic. Veganism should be viewed as one of the easiest to achieve and most sensible changes humanity will need to make in order to avoid the impending climate disaster. It is hoped that Gates’ views will evolve as the explosion in popularity of plant-based diets worldwide continues, and he will recognize that veganism is necessary if we are serious about getting to zero.
Cashews, while versatile and nutritious, can come with significant costs to human well-being. By informing ourselves of these costs and striving for solutions, including Fairtrade, we can start to address these issues.
The unsung hero of our health and vitality is dietary fibre. Unfortunately, most of us are deficient, leading to serious health consequences. Affecting meat-eaters and vegans alike, fibre deficiency can be corrected with the right knowledge and a will to change.
The path to going vegan looks different for everybody. Some people go vegan overnight. Many others take a longer route. Wherever you are in your journey, it’s always a good time to choose veganism!
