Our Mission

Earthsave Canada is a non-profit, educational organization promoting awareness of the environmental, ethical and health consequences of our food choices. We advocate the move towards a plant-based diet for environmental sustainability, better health, and compassion toward non-human animals.

A Little Background

The EarthSave Foundation was started in the United States in 1987 by John Robbins as a result of overwhelming response to his book, "Diet for a New America." Earthsave Canada grew out of the excitement generated by a presentation by John in Vancouver in the fall of 1989. At about the same time, Earthsave organizations were being established across Canada, particularly in Ontario and Quebec. Earthsave was legally incorporated as a nonprofit society in British Columbia on March 1, 1990. With yet another visit by John that month, the resulting media coverage gave Earthsave Canada a tremendous boost and membership began to grow. After six years of steady growth, affiliation with Earthsave International became official at the Annual General Membership meeting in May of 1996. Since then we have grown along with our members, but remain an economically sound volunteer run organization with one part time employee and a very active board.

Earthsave Canada has been putting on events such as our popular Taste of Health annual festival (education and samples!), as well as our speaker series and information talks at schools and events throughout the year. Our ubiquitous Vegetarian Directory is currently being updated to include some fabulous new eateries and veg-friendly businesses, and should be available all over town by the spring. The ever-growing Member Discount Program (MDP) now boasts more than 80 businesses, offering discounts and quality products and services to ESC members, helping us engage others in using their wallets to drive change.

We continue bringing people together through our monthly dine-outs and potlucks where like-minded people can get together over a cruelty-free meal and explore new menus. We have also started the member-led Veg Club where folks can hook up and hang out in a less structured environment.

When coming together as a community, food can bring us together or make us feel isolated when our beliefs interfere with our ability to take part in a group meal. Yet another incredible benefit of a plant-based diet is that EVERYONE can partake. All cultures and beliefs are welcome at our table. Food is fast becoming an equity issue that cannot be ignored.

In 2012 we are making changes and growing even more. We hope you will want to be part of it and help us make a difference.
