Transition Foods


There are many meat, dairy and egg substitutes on the market these days.  Many of them are high in sodium and low in nutrition. These are not foods we should eat daily, even if they are plant-based. That said, these foods can still play an important role in helping folks transition to a plant-based diet. For many, the first steps to going plant-based are scary and strange. Many mourn the loss of traditional foods and treats, and feel like they must 'do without' or feel awkward at gatherings. If a veggie dog helps a child feel included, or a vegan cheesy pizza stops you from falling off the wagon, then this can only be a good thing. As with all things, the key is moderation. To ensure you are eating a healthy diet these items should be seen as treats only. Stick to vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds most days.                                      
Some of our transition food favourites:

Artisan vegan grain meats. Sausages, frankfurters, roasts and more. Most are soy free, and all are super tasty alternatives to animal products. 

Dairy-free, soy-free and gluten-free, this stuff melts away your cheese cravings. Vegan mozza, cheddar and Jack shreds that freeze well for better storage. Cream cheese and wedges, pizza too!

Meat-free options for every occasion. Veggie burgers, chick'n wings, stuffed turk'y', Mandarin crispy chik'n, and many more options that are also showing up in restaurants and other food service areas.

Non-dairy butter substitutes, shortening, mayo, snack foods, milks, nutbutters, coconut spreads and more. All of their products are 100% plant-based, vegan, non-GMO, lactose-free, gluten-free, egg-free, casein-free, have 0g of trans fat.

Try Vegenaise if you are looking for eggless mayo in a variety of flavours. Cholesterol and preservative free, and every ingredient has been verified by the Non-GMO Project, low in sodium and contains no gluten, hydrogenated oils or trans fats. More into Miracle Whip style spreads? try Nayonaise, made with non-GMO ingredients and expeller pressed oil, it’s cholesterol free and a good source of vitamin B12.

Try making your own faux meats and cheeses, that way you can ensure that they are healthy choices, that still satisfy your taste buds.

Palm Oil: Many transition foods and vegan treats contain palm oil. While palm oil is a plant-based food, it is incredibly destructive to the environment and the animals living in it. Try to limit or eliminate palm oil from your diet when you can. More on The Problem with Palm Oil here.
