The Healthy People Happy Planet Food Guide

Help fund Earthsave Canada's Canadian-made Educational Literature
Give to today!

Our popular brochures series has been a huge hit, and now the big project we need your help with is creating our Healthy People Happy Planet Food Guide.

These days most Canadians receive the bulk of their nutritional information from advertisers. Industry is driving Canada's food guide recommendations and the planet, our health, and the animals are suffering for it. We need to take the focus away from processed animal products to whole food, plant-based options. Education is the key to a healthy and sustainable future.

YOU can help us balance the nutritional information out there with some well researched data from the experts. Earthsave Canada is adding to our educational literature series by creating a Canadian-made veg starter kit booklet and colourful plant-based food guide, with corresponding power point presentation. Help Earthsave Canada bring educational tools into schools and workplaces. Prevention is the best prescription! Give today!

WHAT IS A PLANT-BASED DIET?

‘Plant-based’ is a flexible diet where the bulk of calories and nutrition come from plant sources. Plants such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds, are the base of the diet. This way of eating is not as strict as going vegan, and is more focused on whole foods and healthy options, not just foods free from animal products.

WHY A PLANT-BASED
FOOD GUIDE?

This diet results in significant benefits to our health, the environment and the lives of animals. Organic animal products are a luxury few can afford while most can agree that factory farming is far from appetizing. Many cultures and beliefs do not eat certain meats, or cannot tolerate dairy, but everyone can enjoy a plant-based meal and all are welcome at the table. Reducing our consumption of animal products may very well be the greatest contribution to sustainability we can make as individuals, and is certainly the most highly recommended way of preventing chronic diseases.

WHY DO WE NEED CANADIAN-MADE LITERATURE?

  • The importation of literature from the US or UK is neither environmentally sustainable nor fiscally responsible due to the higher costs incurred by duty and shipping.
  • The information should be particular to our country's laws and guidelines as our rules regarding growth hormones and care of livestock differ greatly from those of the United States.
  • Currently the bulk of veg starter kits world-wide have a animal advocacy focus, we would also like to highlight the importance of environmental effects of our diet, as well as health.
  • We should have complete control of the content e.g. we prefer to provide materials that do not include any graphic imagery or product advertisements.
  • Our materials would promote moving towards a more plant-based diet – not an all or nothing approach. This ensures our materials are suitable for environments where other stakeholders are involved.
  • Only 40.6% of Canadians aged 12 and older reported that they consumed fruit and vegetables five or more times per day (as directed by the Health Canada). This rate represents a continued decline in consumption and a dire need for education if we are to ensure a healthy future for all Canadians. We feel this constitutes a national emergency.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

By providing tools that are easy to distribute and understand, we expect to substantially increase community awareness of the effects of our diets on the environment, animals, and human health, as well as motivate significant positive change in people's behaviour. By encouraging work places, schools and communities to embrace the move towards a more plant-based diet we will see a significant decrease in animal suffering, and increased benefits to our overall health and environment. By providing talking points and credible sources, we hope to balance information provided by advertisers and encourage people to vote with their dollars by supporting companies that don’t support animal cruelty. These resources will empower everyone to make better choices with confidence and compassion. Prevention is the best prescription!

WHAT ARE YOUR REASONS FOR SUPPORTING
A PLANT-POWERED FOOD GUIDE?

FOR YOUR HEALTH: PREVENTION IS THE BEST PRESCRIPTION!

The World Health Organization has found that a diet low in animal products, while also higher in fruit and vegetables, was associated with a lower risk of: heart disease, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and various types of cancer. A more plant-based diet, rich in fiber, folic acid, antioxidants, and phytochemicals, is also associated with: lower blood cholesterol, lower incidence of stroke, lower total and LDL cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and lower body fat.  There are currently more obese people on the planet than hungry. According to the International Red Cross there were 1.5 billion people suffering obesity worldwide last year, while 925 million were undernourished. Prevention is the best prescription.

FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: SAVE THE PLANET AND FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING

It requires an average of 6kg of plant protein to produce 1kg of animal protein, and 100 times more water. A single dairy cow produces approximately 120 pounds of wet manure per day, which is equivalent to that of 20 to 40 humans.  On average 990 litres of water are required to produce one litre of milk. The UN reports that animal agriculture is responsible for 18% - 25% of global warming emissions worldwide, with cattle ranches and feed production accounting for over 70% of deforestation in the Amazon. The livestock sector continues to grow each year and is quite probably the largest source of water pollution worldwide. As an individual, our diet can make a more significant impact on the environment that almost all other efforts.

FOR THE ANIMALS: COMPASSION FOR ALL

Small family farms are the exception to the rule. In reality, about 97% of animals grown for food in Canada are raised on huge factory farms, where they live unnatural lives of intensive confinement. Like humans, dairy cows carry their young for 9 months. Kept continually pregnant, they have their young taken from them soon after birth, and are then slaughtered after they stop producing well. The egg industry destroys millions of male chicks each year as they are not considered profitable. Pigs, one of the smartest animals on the planet, have their teeth clipped, tails docked, and males are castrated – all without anaesthesia. In Canada they may legally be transported to sale or slaughter for 36 hours without water, food or rest. All creatures deserve compassion. Why stop and horses, dogs and kittens?

FOR COMMUNITY: SUPPORT SOCIAL JUSTICE

While most can agree that the products of factory farming are far from appetizing, organic animal products are a luxury few can afford. Plant-based diets rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, are affordable to all, and are certainly the most highly recommended way of preventing chronic disease.
Currently, over 70% of grains grown in the North America feed livestock, not people. Livestock eat 80% of the world’s soybean crop and more than 50% of the world’s corn crop, meanwhile more than 3 billion people on the planet are malnourished. It is also worth noting that well over 70% of the world’s population is intolerant to dairy products, and many do not consume certain animal products for religious, ethical, environmental or health reasons. By always providing well-labeled plant-based options, we ensure that everyone is welcome at the table, without feeling singled out or holding up the line. It’s the most equitable diet there is!
